Day 10: A day off, visiting Zollverein.

Nov 16, 2024

We visited the Ruhr Museum at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site in Essen. It’s an extensive museum covering this region’s history, religion, industry, war, geology, and culture. It is unique in that it is within a very large structure that had been used for coal mining. If you read or watched “All the Light We Cannot See,” the male main character grew up in this area of Zollverein, and his father died in the coal mines. We learned about hundreds (and hundreds) of years of history integrated with seeing the industrial structure of the building. Of note to me was the installation just outside of the museum, helping inspire me when I knew I’d need to return to reality a few days later.

Featured photo: Just outside the Ruhr Museum. This is the piece that inspired me. “FEAR has two meanings: Forget Everything And Run OR Face Everything And Rise.” And also, “Don’t Let Idiots Ruin Your Day!”
